Bombing them back to the Stone Age....

Saw an article today where the President says we are bombing ISIS "harder than ever." Over 9,000 air strikes and counting. This brings some thoughts to my mind. Follow along with me here for a minute, if you don't mind....

We have been bombing the crap out of people for about 14 years now. Afghanistan. Iraq. Pakistan. Who knows where else? Just bombing and bombing and bombing the crap out of all kinds of people.

Supposedly we are eliminating terrorists and making the world a safer place.

So....

Are there fewer terrorists in the world now than there were 14 years ago?

Do you feel safer from terrorists now than you did 14 years ago?

Yeah... That's what I thought....

What is it they say about doing the same thing over and over and over again, and expecting a different result?

The WD-40 Song

Digital single (2015)

One day many years ago, when I was about thirteen,
Daddy took me aside and told me, "Son, there are things you've never seen.
I'm gonna tell you now a secret you'll need to know when you're a man.
The solution to every guy's problems come in a little blue sprayin' can.

Well if your nuts are tight, if your tool is rusty,
If it's hard to screw because your driver is all crusty,
If you need to slide in easily while feelin' nice and sporty,
Get yourself a can of that WD-40.

Well Daddy's words of wisdom stayed forever in my mind,
They helped me through the hardest times when all my gears would grind.
No matter what the challenge, I found that Daddy's words were true,
The solution to every guy's problems are in that little spray can of blue.

So when my nuts are tight and my tool is rusty,
When it's hard for me to screw because my driver is all crusty,
When I need to slide in easily while feelin' nice and sporty,
I just break out my can of WD-40.
I just break out my can of that WD-40.

Holiding My Tongue

You know, there are days -- today happens to be one of them -- when it takes every ounce of my self-control to not post a comment bashing certain people. Even when those people are total arrogant assholes who deserve more than anything to be bashed... and who don't hesitate to do all kinds of bashing on their own.

But I restrain myself, because bashing does not solve the problem, bashing IS the problem. So I hold my tongue, even though it's really not my nature to do so.

I post this now not to pat myself on the back, but perhaps to serve as an example. Because if all I do is hold my tongue, nobody really knows it, do they?  They know I'm being quiet, but maybe I just don't have anything to say.  But if I tell you that I'm holding my tongue, and perhaps give you an idea of why.... well, then maybe I can provide a bit of an example for others.

Maybe then someone will say, "I really hate those blankety-blank [fill-in-most-despised-group-here], and I was on the verge of posting some negative, bashing comment or meme about them. But you know what? That's not going to serve any purpose except to expand and prolong the hatred.  So, as much as it pains me to do so, I'll simply hold my tongue. Or perhaps I'll post something positive or constructive, rather than something negative and derogatory."

Now I know you're all thinking, "That's not me! I'm not negative or bashing. The only people I... er, 'criticize'... are those stupid fools who deserve it."

Uh, guess what, folks... More than likely, it is indeed you. Yes, YOU.

Take a step back and read the stuff you post. Read it objectively. Think about it. Get beyond your hatred, your contempt, your derision. Get beyond your idea that the person or group you are posting about are the stupidest, most out-of-touch, most self-centered and self-absorbed people on the planet. Look at the words you are posting and the attitude they convey. Are you being constructive? Or are you just putting someone down because it sounds clever, and because -- be honest here now -- because you hate them, and because you enjoy getting in a good dig?

Don't tell me they deserve to be put down. Because you know they think the same thing about you. And you wouldn't want to stoop to their level, now, would you?

I guess what I'm getting at here is that hatred is the problem, not the solution. And bashing people -- even when they "deserve" it -- and believe me, there are people I think deserve to be bashed -- but bashing people only adds more hatred to the mix. And hatred exacerbates the problem. Hatred IS the problem, or most of it.

You don't have to like them. But if everybody just stopped bashing each other, we'd be a GIANT STEP closer to making this a better world. Just by that one small act. Or "non-act," as it were.

Just holding our tongues can make the world a better place. Think about it....

Touring the Cosmos

Lyrics by Ed Perrone and Vicky Perrone
Music by Ed Perrone

Digital single (2015)

Flying into London but the Queen doesn't care,
She says Abbie's going downtown, you can visit her there.
Eating fish and chips and drinking ale in the pub, what a good time.

See the white cliffs of Dover, take the ferry to France,
We don't know what's coming next, but we're gonna take a chance.
Climb aboard the bus where we're meeting old friends for the first time.

And we'll be touring the Cosmos
Touring the Cosmos
We'll be touring the Cosmos like it's never been toured before.

Head to Germany, we're going on a cruise down the Rhine,
Some are drinking beer and some are drinking wine,
Look at all the castles, maybe we'll come back and stay in one.

Go to Venice, ride a gondola along the canal,
Then Verona, home of Juliet, Oh wherefore are thou?
Sign the wall, leave your initials with all the other lovers who've been there.

Up in Switzerland, the mountains, we're as high as can be,
Swiss Miss yodels, then we all sing happy birthday to me,
Blow that big horn, chug a beer, and then we'll get back on the bus in the morning.

And we'll keep touring the Cosmos
Touring the Cosmos
We'll keep touring the Cosmos like it's never been toured before.

Dijon, France, we're eating snails, what a delicacy,
Hope the cops don't keep us too long 'cause there's so much to see,
Hours later on the road again, I thought we'd never get out of there.

The Eiffel Tower and the Thinker, it must be Gay Paree,
Mr. Tour Guide is a Hero, all the ladies agree.
Time to go but don't be sad, we'll get together and do some more next year.

'Cause we like touring the Cosmos
Touring the Cosmos
We like touring the Cosmos like it's never been toured before.

You Put Me Through the Wringer (and You Hung Me Out to Dry)

Lyrics and music by Ed Perrone (BMI)

Digital single (2010)

I felt so sad and lonely,
Like I never did before.
I thought I was your one and only
'Til you kicked me out the door.
I never thought I'd see the time
You'd trample on my heart.
But you chewed me up and you spit me out
And that was just the start.

You put me through the wringer
And you hung me out to dry.
My life's in little pieces now
And you're the reason why.
My friends say, "Keep your chin up,"
But I just want to cry
'Cause you put me through the wringer
And you hung me out to dry.

I went to the local barroom
To drown my woes in a cup of brew.
I started feeling better
After I'd put down a few.
Then a man walked up beside me,
He said, "Son, you're in my chair."
Then he poured my beer into my lap
And sent me flying through the air.

He put me through the wringer
And he hung me out to dry.
My life's in little pieces now
And he's the reason why.
My friends say, "Keep your chin up,"
But I just want to cry
'Cause he put me through the wringer
And he hung me out to dry.

I went out to Las Vegas
To try my luck at the gamblin' hall.
The travel agent lady said
That I would have a ball.
But after three days at them tables
I got nothin' left to show.
Them tables cleaned my pockets,
Now I got no place to go.

Well, they put me through the wringer
And they hung me out to dry.
My life's in little pieces now
And they're the reason why.
My friends say, "Keep your chin up,"
But I just want to cry
'Cause they put me through the wringer
And they hung me out to dry.
You put me through the wringer
And you hung me out to dry.

Nostalgic Tears (Vicky's Song)

Lyrics and music by Ed Perrone (BMI)

From the album, Nostalgic Tears (2003)

Clearing out the cobwebs from the attics of my mind
Sweeping off the dust from all the memories that I find
Hold them to the light and reminisce -- but not too long
I have to go
To move along

Turning back the pages in the diary of my years
Leafing through the dreams and hopes, the sorrows and the fears
But now the pages crumble into dust and blow away
I can't go back
It's another day

Now I can see tomorrow and the sun is pushing through
It'll shine a hundred years
I see tomorrow and I'm spending it with you
Wipe away
Nostalgic tears

Gazing out the window to where the sun is shining clear
You're the one who drove away the darkness and my fear
You gave me the courage to leave this dusty room behind
Brought me hope
And peace of mind

Now I can see tomorrow and the sun is pushing through
It'll shine a hundred years
I see tomorrow and I'm spending it with you
Wipe away
Nostalgic tears

Locking up the attic and the memories that are there
Throw away the key and where it lands, well I don't care
Yesterdays are over, it's tomorrow that is true
Holding hands
Me and you

Now I can see the future and the sun is shining through
It'll shine a thousand years
I see the future and I'm spending it with you
Nevermore
Nostalgic tears
Nevermore
Nostalgic tears

Good for You

Lyrics and music by Ed Perrone (BMI)
Copyright © 2014 Ed Perrone. All rights reserved.
Digital single (2014)

Well, the Congresswoman tells her citizens,
"You know I feel the pain that you feel."
And then she climbs into her limousine
To go eat a thousand-dollar meal.

And the President tells the people,
"I want our nation to be free.
But if the price of freedom is tyranny,
Well, that's the way it's got to be!"

And when are you going to realize
That they're lying to your face?
They tell you what you want to hear
Just to keep you in your place.

Their motto is "Do what I say,
But ignore the things I do.
If it's good for me,
It can't be good for you."

And the preacher tells his congregation,
"The world is evil, it's full of sin."
But when the Lady in Red comes knocking,
He says, "Baby, won't you come on in?"

And the pushers on the TV
Will sell you pills for all your pains.
But just a single toke on your homegrown weed
Will land you in a ball and chain.

And when are you going to realize
That they're lying to your face?
They tell you what you want to hear
Just to keep you in your place.

Their motto is "Do what I say,
But ignore the things I do.
If it's good for me,
It can't be good for you."

And the religious true believers
Fight in their true believer wars
Where they shout across the battlefield,
"Our god is bigger than yours!"

And the rest of us grow weary
Of all the lies and hate and pain.
They tell us black is white and up is down
It'll make you want to go insane.

And when are you going to realize
That they're lying to your face?
They tell you what you want to hear
Just to keep you in your place.

Their motto is "Do what I say,
But ignore the things I do.
If it's good for me,
It can't be good for you.

Well, if it's good for me,
It can't be good for you.

Said if it's good for me,
Well it's against the law for you!"

Inquisition

Lyrics and music by Ed Perrone (BMI)
Copyright © 2006 Ed Perrone. All rights reserved.
From the album, Holy Wars (2006)

All the witches are in chains and you peek out your window
Watch the priests drag them down the street to the burning ground
See the torches, feel the flames, and you hear them screaming
Hide your face, close the curtain, it’ll all go away.

Hear the righteous ones preach that it’s all for the good of the people
Send the sinners back down to the devil where they belong
But your heart says those sinners are really no different than you are
How much longer until that same finger comes pointing at you?

And what are you gonna do
What are you gonna do
When the Inquisition comes for you?

You lie back in your bed, your eyes staring up at the darkness
But the images haunt you, you can’t seem to send them away
The face that you saw looking up at your window in horror
The face of an innocent caught up in hatred and rage.

And what are you gonna do
What are you gonna do
When the Inquisition comes for you?

Your mind asks you how many more souls must suffer this torment
Your conscience asks when you will cry out it all has to end
But your fear replies silence is golden, it’s just not your problem
Pull the covers up closer and hope that it all goes away

And what are you gonna do
What are you gonna do
When the Inquisition comes for you?

And what are you gonna do
What are you gonna do
When the Inquisition comes for you?
When the Inquisition comes for you?

If Jesus Met Mohammed

Lyrics and music by Ed Perrone (BMI)
Copyright © 2006 Ed Perrone. All rights reserved.
From the album, Holy Wars (2006)

If Jesus met Mohammed
What do you think they'd say?
Would they chat about the weather
Just to pass the time of day?
Would they wander down by the schoolyard
And watch the children play?
If Jesus met Mohammed
One fine day.

If they both ran into Moses
Hangin' out at the traffic light
Would he say, "Hey, guys, I'm buying,
Let's go out and have a bite"?
Would they laugh about the good times?
Would they stay up half the night?
Swappin' stories, tellin' jokes,
It just seems right.

And would they take a stroll into the park,
Enjoy the summer breeze?
Kick a soccer ball around the field
Then relax beneath the trees?
Would they sing a song together
About joy and peace and love?
And maybe say a little prayer
To heaven up above?

If Jesus met Mohammed
What do you think they'd say?
I like to think they'd hit it off,
Make plans for another day.
Bring along their buddy Moses,
Everything's gonna be okay,
Three old friends just sharing good times
All the day.

I think they'd take a stroll into the park,
Enjoy the summer breeze.
Kick a soccer ball around the field,
Then relax beneath the trees.
They'd probably sing a song together
About joy and peace and love.
And maybe say a little prayer
To heaven up above.
And maybe say a little prayer
To heaven up above.

Holy Wars

Lyrics and music by Ed Perrone (BMI)
Copyright © 2005 Ed Perrone. All rights reserved.
From the album, Holy Wars (2006)

They're taking me away
Because they didn't like the things I had to say
My thinking's out of line
And so they tell me that salvation can't be mine
Ah-ah

They're pounding at the door
My brain is frozen, I'm just staring at the floor
With scriptures in their hand (weapons!)
They spread their message all across the godless land
Ah-ah

And they tell me Jesus saves the sinners' souls
But who will save me from his followers' burning coals?
Ah-ah

And they say they're only soldiers fighting in a Holy War
Marching lockstep with their orders from on high.
But how did I become the enemy? I'll never know for sure.
I didn't ask to fight, I didn't ask to die.
Ah-ah

They're taking me away
They shout, "For infidels it's now the Judgment Day!"
My thoughts can't be controlled
And their solution's just too vicious to be told
Ah-ah

They're knocking down the door
Their eyes are empty as they rush across the floor.
With scriptures in their hand (weapons!)
They spread their message all across the heathen land
Ah-ah

And they say, "Praise Allah who lives up on high!"
And they want us all to join him in the sky
Ah-ah

And they say they're only soldiers fighting in a Holy War
Bringing infidels the justice they deserve.
As they rid the world of sinners, they tell me I can be sure
That my blood gives glory to the god they serve.
Ah-ah

And they all just say they're soldiers fighting in their Holy Wars
Bringing heaven down to earth is what they claim.
But the hands of God are bloody, only hatred still endures
And their heaven and their hell look just the same.
And their heaven and their hell look just the same.
Ah-ah
